How to Tag Someone on LinkedIn: Mentions, Photo Tags and Links in Posts

· Editorial team · October 14, 2026

To tag someone on LinkedIn, type @ in a post or comment, start typing their name, and select them from the list that appears. The name turns into a link to their profile, and once you publish, they get a notification in the app and by email. Company Pages work the same way, and photos have their own Tag button.

Steps checked on October 14, 2026 against LinkedIn Help: Mention people in your posts, Tag people in your photos, Removing a mention or tag of yourself, Share articles or links and Use Post Inspector to refresh URL. LinkedIn uses "mention" for an @ in text and "tag" for a name placed on a photo. Most people call both tagging, and this guide does too.

How to tag someone in a LinkedIn post

LinkedIn's mention steps are the same for a new post and for a comment on someone else's post.

On desktop

  1. On your LinkedIn homepage, click Start a post (or click Comment under someone else's post).
  2. Type @ and start typing the person's name. A list of matching members appears.
  3. Select the right person from the list. Their name turns into a link.
  4. Finish your text, then click Post.

On the LinkedIn app

  1. Tap Post in the navigation bar.
  2. Tap the @ key on your keyboard and start typing the name.
  3. Select the person from the suggestions and finish your post.
  4. Tap Post.

If the person has a common name, LinkedIn suggests adding their company to what you type, for example "Jane Doe Acme" if she works at Acme, so the right profile comes up. You usually do not need to be connected to mention someone, though LinkedIn may limit mentions of members you aren't connected with.

Forgot a tag? LinkedIn says you can add a mention by editing the post or comment. Open the More icon on your post, choose Edit post, add the @mention and click Save. An Edited label then appears on the post (Edit a shared post).

How to tag a company on LinkedIn

To tag a company in a LinkedIn post, type @ followed by the company's LinkedIn Page name and select the Page from the list, the same way you mention a person. The company needs a LinkedIn Page for this to work, since you are linking to that Page.

On the company's side, Page admins see these posts in the Page admin view under Activity, using the Mentions filter (View and engage with your LinkedIn Page activity). LinkedIn's Page posts FAQ lists "member posts that mention your organization" among the things a Page can repost, which is one practical reason to tag a company you genuinely worked with: it gives them something easy to share.

LinkedIn's article editor help confirms the same @ mention works for both members and Pages inside articles, where the mentioned member or Page is notified and their name is hyperlinked.

How to tag someone in a LinkedIn comment

LinkedIn's commenting help says you can type @ to mention someone in a comment or a reply, on desktop and on the app.

  1. Click or tap Comment under the post (or Reply under a comment).
  2. Type @ and start typing the name.
  3. Select the person or Page from the list.
  4. Finish your comment and submit it.

Tagging in comments is the polite way to bring a colleague into a conversation ("@Name, you ran this test last year, what did you see?"). It is also where tagging gets abused, so keep it to people who have a real reason to read the thread.

How to tag people in photos on LinkedIn

Photo tags place a name on the image itself. LinkedIn's photo tagging help gives these steps.

Desktop

  1. On your homepage, select the Photo option in the share box.
  2. Choose up to nine images.
  3. In the Edit your photo window, click Tag, then click the spot on the photo.
  4. Type the member's name and select it. Repeat for each person, and move between images if you uploaded several.
  5. Optionally click Add alt text to describe the image for screen readers.
  6. Click Done, write your post, choose who can see it and click Post.

Mobile app

  1. Tap Post, then take a photo or pick up to nine from your gallery.
  2. Tap the Tag icon, then tap the photo.
  3. Type the name and tap it. Swipe to the next image to tag more people.
  4. Tap Next, add your text, set the audience and tap Post.

You can tag up to 30 people per photo, and you do not have to be connected to them. LinkedIn Pages can be tagged in photos the same way, also up to 30 Pages or members per photo (Tag a LinkedIn Page in your photo). As the author, you can remove tags after posting.

Why can't I tag someone on LinkedIn?

When a tag will not work, the cause is usually one of these.

On a narrow screen, scroll sideways to read every column.

What happensPossible reasonWhat to do
LinkedIn says the member can't be mentionedThey turned off mentions in their settings (LinkedIn Help)Use their name as plain text, or message them the link instead
The person does not appear in the listLinkedIn may limit mentions of members you aren't connected withCheck the spelling, add their company to the search, or connect first
The tag vanished after postingYour post is not public, and mentions of anyone outside the chosen audience are removed (Visibility of mentions and tags)Set the audience to Anyone, or accept that only people in that audience can be tagged
The wrong person shows upA common nameAdd the company name after their name while typing
You want to tag after publishingMentions can be added by editingUse Edit post and add the @mention

The setting behind the first row is Allow mentions, tags, and collaborations. On desktop it sits under Me, Settings & Privacy, Visibility, then Mentions, tags, and collaborations (Control the visibility of your mentions and tags). When someone switches it off, nobody can mention or tag them in new posts, comments or photos.

How many people should you tag on LinkedIn?

The only limit LinkedIn Help publishes is the photo one: up to 30 people or Pages per photo. It does not publish a number for @mentions in post text, so be careful with guides that quote one.

The better question is who belongs in the post. A simple rule: tag someone only if they are in the photo, did the work you are describing, or are directly quoted or credited. Tagging ten people who had nothing to do with a post sends each of them a notification for something irrelevant to them, and it reads as fishing for comments. A short thank-you post that credits the three people who actually shipped the project does the opposite.

If you want someone's opinion on a post they were not involved in, a direct message with the link is usually kinder than a public tag.

What does the tagged person see?

Once you publish, LinkedIn notifies the mentioned or tagged member in the app and by email, unless they have turned off that notification (Tag people in your photos). The mention links the post or comment to their profile, and anyone reading can click the name to visit it.

You still choose the post's audience in the share box, but LinkedIn says a post with mentions or tags may also be shared with the tagged person's network (Visibility of mentions and tags). Keep that in mind before tagging someone in a post they might not want their own colleagues to see.

How to remove a tag or mention of yourself

You can remove your own name from someone else's post at any time (Removing a mention or tag of yourself).

  1. From a post or comment: click the More icon in the upper-right corner, select Remove mention, then click Remove to confirm. Your name stays in the text, but it no longer links to your profile.
  2. From a photo: click the Tag icon on the photo, click the trash icon next to your name in the Tagged pop-up, then click Remove. The member who tagged you is not notified.

The steps are the same on the mobile app with taps. To stop future tags, switch off Allow mentions, tags, and collaborations as described above. That setting does not remove mentions and tags that already exist.

Can you hyperlink text in a LinkedIn post?

Not in the way you would in a blog post or email. LinkedIn's help for sharing links in posts only describes pasting or typing the URL into the post field. The Link option that turns selected words into a hyperlink is documented for the LinkedIn article editor, not for regular posts. So in a post, write the sentence and put the plain URL after it, for example: "The full checklist is here: https://example.com/checklist".

In a post, the clickable text is an @mention (it links to a profile or Page), a hashtag and the URL itself. If you need several links woven into running text, an article or newsletter is the right format.

How to add a link to a LinkedIn post

Desktop

  1. Click Start a post at the top of your homepage.
  2. Paste or type the URL into the What do you want to talk about? field.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the preview. If LinkedIn can't fetch an image, you can still post the link.
  4. Choose your audience from the dropdown next to your name, then click Post.

Mobile app

  1. Tap Post in the navigation bar.
  2. Paste the URL into the Share your thoughts field.
  3. Wait for the preview, choose the audience and tap Post.

These steps come from LinkedIn's Share articles or links help page. A few things that trip people up:

  • Spaces break links. LinkedIn says URLs with spaces can't be shared and return an error (Troubleshooting issues sharing URLs).
  • Editing does not fix a preview. Only the text of a published post can be edited. Swapping in a new URL will not show a new preview image, so to change the shared link you need to delete the post and create a new one (Edit a shared post).
  • The share box remembers links. The same page says the share box remembers the last link you shared for three days.

LinkedIn builds the preview card from the page's Open Graph tags. Its help on making your website shareable lists four: og:title, og:image, og:description and og:url. The image should be at least 1200 x 627 pixels at a 1.91:1 ratio and no more than 5 MB, and images narrower than 401 pixels show up as a small thumbnail.

If the preview shows an old title or image, it is usually LinkedIn's cache. You have two options:

  1. Use Post Inspector. Open LinkedIn's Post Inspector, enter the URL and check that the preview looks right. LinkedIn notes that this only changes the preview for new posts that include the URL; posts already published keep the old preview (Use Post Inspector to refresh URL).
  2. Wait. LinkedIn suggests allowing 48 hours from the last time the URL was shared before trying again (Troubleshooting issues sharing URLs).

Before you post, run the link through our free LinkedIn link preview checker. It shows the title and image LinkedIn is likely to pull, flags missing og tags or a wrong-sized image, and explains how to refresh the result in Post Inspector.

Yes. LinkedIn automatically shortens any link longer than 26 characters once you click Post (Short URLs in shared posts). The same page says you can add text before or after the URL, and if you share an article with no text after the link, the URL is hidden from the share.

Because LinkedIn shortens long links for you, you only need a separate shortener if you want its click tracking. A third-party short link also hides the destination from readers.

Should you put links in the post or in the comments?

LinkedIn does not publish any rule that treats links in comments differently from links in posts, so treat this as a judgment call, not a ranking tactic (see how the LinkedIn algorithm works). Two practical points:

  • In the post, the link gets the preview card and is the first thing a reader can act on. Use this when the link is the point of the post, such as a launch, a job opening or an event.
  • In a comment, the post reads as a complete thought on its own, and the link is there for people who want more. Use this when the post stands alone and the link is a reference. Say "link in the comments" in the post so readers know where to look.

Whichever you choose, tell people what is behind the link and why it is worth their time. A bare URL with no context gets ignored in any position.

Write the post before you tag anyone

Tags and links are the last step. The post still has to be worth reading for the people you tag and for everyone else. Draft it first using the structure in how to write a LinkedIn post, then check how it looks on desktop and mobile, including where the "see more" cut falls, in the free LinkedIn post preview tool. If you find drafting the hard part, WriteHero writes LinkedIn post drafts in your own voice based on your real posts, and you add the tags and links before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

How do you tag someone on LinkedIn?

Type @ in a post or comment, start typing the person's name, select them from the list of suggestions, then finish your text and click Post. On the mobile app, tap the @ key on your keyboard. The person gets an email and an app notification once the post is published.

Why can't I tag someone on LinkedIn?

The most common reason is that the person has turned off Allow mentions, tags, and collaborations in their visibility settings; LinkedIn tells you when a member can't be mentioned. LinkedIn may also limit mentions of members you aren't connected with, and if your post isn't public, mentions of people outside the chosen audience are removed.

How many people can you tag in a LinkedIn photo?

LinkedIn Help says you can tag up to 30 people or Pages per photo, and a post can hold up to nine images. LinkedIn Help does not publish a separate limit for @mentions in post text.

Can you hyperlink text in a LinkedIn post?

LinkedIn Help describes adding links to a post by pasting or typing the URL into the post field. It documents a Link option for turning text into a hyperlink only in the LinkedIn article editor, so in a regular post the link appears as a URL, and links longer than 26 characters are shortened once you click Post.

How do I refresh a LinkedIn link preview?

Open LinkedIn's Post Inspector, enter the URL and check that the preview is right. The refresh only affects new posts that include the link; posts already published keep their old preview. Without Post Inspector, LinkedIn suggests waiting 48 hours after the last share of that URL.

How do I remove a tag of myself on LinkedIn?

On the post or comment, open the More menu in the upper-right corner, choose Remove mention and confirm with Remove. Your name stays as plain text but no longer links to your profile. For a photo, click the Tag icon, then the trash icon next to your name. The person who tagged you is not notified when you remove a photo tag.
