LinkedIn Banner Size: Cover Image Dimensions for Profiles and Pages

· Editorial team · October 13, 2026

The LinkedIn banner size for a personal profile is 1584 x 396 pixels (a 4:1 ratio), saved as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. A company Page cover is a different shape: 1512 x 256 pixels, PNG or JPEG, up to 3 MB.

Specifications checked on October 13, 2026 against LinkedIn Help: Add or change the cover image on your profile, Photo won't upload to your profile and Image specifications for LinkedIn Pages. LinkedIn mostly calls the banner a cover image now; some help pages and older articles still say background photo or header.

ImageRecommended sizeFile rules
Personal profile cover (banner)1584 x 396 pxJPG or PNG, under 8 MB, no GIF
Company Page cover1512 x 256 px (also the minimum)PNG or JPEG, max 3 MB
Company Page logo400 x 400 px (minimum 268 x 268)PNG or JPEG, max 3 MB
Profile photoAccepted from 400 x 400 px to 7680 x 4320 pxMax 8 MB

The two cover shapes are not interchangeable. A 1584 x 396 design is 4:1; a Page cover at 1512 x 256 is roughly 6:1, so reusing a profile banner on a Page crops a large share of the top and bottom.

You will still find 1400 x 425 (an old profile size) and 1128 x 191 (an old Page size) in older guides. Neither matches LinkedIn's current help pages.

Where the profile photo covers your banner

LinkedIn's help says the cover image appears behind your profile photo in the introduction section. In our checks on desktop, the round photo overlaps the lower-left part of the cover. On the mobile app the crop and photo position are not the same as on desktop, so a layout that looks balanced on a laptop can lose text on a phone.

A safe working layout for a 1584 x 396 canvas:

  • Keep the left third free of text and faces, especially the bottom half.
  • Put any words in the center or right half, away from the top and bottom edges.
  • Use one short line of large text, or none. Small type becomes unreadable on a phone.
  • Avoid placing a logo or contact detail right at an edge, where a crop can cut it.

These are design precautions, not LinkedIn rules. LinkedIn does not publish a pixel-exact safe zone for profile covers. For company Pages, its help does say to keep key details away from the edges, especially the lower-right corner, and to place important information in the center.

How to add or change your LinkedIn banner

Desktop

  1. Click Me at the top of your LinkedIn homepage, then View Profile.
  2. Click the camera icon in the upper-right corner of your introduction section.
  3. Upload a single photo, or choose one of LinkedIn's images.
  4. Crop, reposition, filter or rotate the image, then click Apply.

To change or delete an existing cover later, click the edit icon on the cover image instead.

LinkedIn mobile app

  1. Tap your profile photo, then tap it again to open your profile.
  2. Tap the camera icon in the upper-right corner of the introduction section.
  3. Upload a photo from your device or pick one of the images shown.
  4. Adjust the crop and position, then tap Save.

Menu labels can vary by app version and interface language. LinkedIn's help also lists a cover slideshow as a Premium feature for Premium Business, Recruiter Lite, Sales Navigator Core, Premium Pages and LinkedIn Learning. If you go live on LinkedIn, your cover changes to show the stream and reverts afterwards; there is no opt-out.

ProblemWhat to check
The upload failsFile type is JPG or PNG (not GIF), size is under 8 MB. LinkedIn suggests trying another browser or compressing the file.
The image looks soft or pixelatedExport at least 1584 x 396 px. LinkedIn suggests a larger file size and notes that photos look better than images with logos.
Text is cut off on mobileMove text toward the center and away from the photo corner, then recheck in the app.
The colors look differentExport in sRGB. Many design tools default to it, but print-oriented files may not use it.
A company Page cover is cropped badlyYou probably reused a 4:1 profile banner. Make a separate 1512 x 256 Page version.

What to put on a LinkedIn banner

A banner does not need to sell. Its job is to confirm what your headline already says, in a way that still reads at phone size. Five patterns that work as starting points:

  1. One promise line. The outcome you help with, in under eight words. It should agree with your headline, not compete with it.
  2. A work photo. You speaking, teaching or at a real workplace. Use only images you have the right to use.
  3. Proof you can stand behind. A book cover, a publication name or a certification, but only if it is real and current.
  4. A brand color and nothing else. A clean field of color is better than a busy stock photo that says nothing about you.
  5. A next step. A short website or newsletter name. Keep it in the center so a crop cannot cut it.

For example, a fictional freelance data analyst might use a plain dark-blue field with "Clean dashboards for finance teams" on the right half. The analyst's headline, About section and recent posts should then make the same claim in more detail.

Check the banner against the rest of your profile

After uploading, open your profile on a laptop and a phone. Read the banner, profile photo, headline and the first lines of your About section in that order. They should describe the same person and the same offer.

If the banner is fine but the words are not, work on those next: see LinkedIn headline examples, how to choose a LinkedIn profile picture and the full LinkedIn profile optimization guide. The free LinkedIn profile analyzer reviews your headline and posts; it does not grade the banner image itself.

To make a banner at exactly this size, use the free LinkedIn banner maker: add your headline, pick a background or upload an image, and download a 1584 x 396 PNG.

For image sizes inside posts rather than on your profile, use the LinkedIn post size guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn banner size?

For a personal profile, LinkedIn recommends 1584 x 396 pixels, a 4:1 ratio. The file must be JPG or PNG and smaller than 8 MB. LinkedIn now calls this image the cover image; older guides call it the background photo or banner.

What size is a LinkedIn company Page cover image?

LinkedIn's current Page specifications list 1512 x 256 pixels as both the minimum and the recommended cover size, in PNG or JPEG, up to 3 MB. Older guides that quote 1128 x 191 pixels are out of date.

Can I use a GIF as my LinkedIn banner?

No. LinkedIn's photo upload help says background photos must be PNG or JPG and that GIFs are not supported.

Why does my LinkedIn banner look blurry?

LinkedIn suggests choosing an image with a larger file size, and notes that photos look better than images with logos. Export at 1584 x 396 pixels or a larger image with the same 4:1 ratio, keep it under 8 MB, and avoid small text.

Where will my profile photo cover the banner?

Your cover image sits behind your profile photo in the introduction section. On desktop the photo overlaps the lower-left part of the cover, and the crop differs on the mobile app, so keep words and faces away from that corner and from the edges, then check both views after uploading.
